Section titled “What is a Vehicle Fleet?”A Vehicle Fleet in HDM5 refers to the set of representative vehicle types used to model traffic and its impacts on the road network.
It does not attempt to define every individual vehicle on the road. Instead, it is a simplified but structured grouping of vehicle classes and categories that reflect real-world traffic.
HDM5 allows the user to define an unlimited set of Vehicle Types within a Vehicle Fleet based on a set of vehicle Base Types. These Base Types are grouped into a set of pre-defined Vehicle Categories and Vehicle Classes.
Why is a Vehicle Fleet important?
Section titled “Why is a Vehicle Fleet important?”A Vehicle Fleet must be defined for an analysis. They are important because they drive road deterioration (heavier vehicles cause more damage to the pavement); vehicle operating costs (VOC); travel time and speed modelling; and economic evaluation.
How to Enter a Vehicle Fleet
Section titled “How to Enter a Vehicle Fleet”The Vehicle Fleet consists of a number of Vehicle Types. In the Vehicle Fleet input screen, add a new Vehicle Type Name. Then, select a Vehicle Base Type from the drop-down list. This automatically populates the Vehicle Class and Category. Click the edit button or the ellipsis to edit the parameters for the chosen vehicle type including vehicle characteristics, vehicle costs, and advanced vehicle calibration data.
